Paris has always been a major centre of European culture.  Both Haydn and Mozart wrote symphonies for Paris, which are juxtaposed here with three French gems.  The Turkish pianist, Idil Biret, one of the most recorded pianists of all time, returns to play both the Ballade by Gabriel Fauré and Saint-Saëns’s most popular piano concerto with its deliciously light scherzo and wickedly vibrant Tarantella finale - described by Jeremy Nicholas as “Bach meets Offenbach”.******

******Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor
******Elgar - Symphony No.1 in A flat major
Elgar’s First Symphony is imbued with the atmosphere of Britain before the horrors of the Great War.  It is a noble work of great optimism with its opening ‘motto’ brilliantly transformed throughout its course into one of the most stirring and uplifting endings in all orchestral music, allowing us to reflect that noble sacrifices are not in vain.   Rachmaninov’s most popular piano concerto achieved even greater fame through its use as the soundtrack for the wartime film ‘Brief Encounter’ and we are delighted to welcome British pianist Anthony Hewitt, winnner of many international competitions and awards.
