Worthing Symphony Orchestra

Conductor: John Gibbons****Soloist : Idil Biret (piano)

****Mozart - Overture to The Marriage of Figaro
Beethoven - Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat Major (Emperor)
Beethoven - Symphony No. 7 in A Major
Pehkonen - Concert Overture Playing with Fire

Dramatic film moments are often encapsulated in stirring music and the climactic speech
given by George VI (played by Colin Firth) in The King’s Speech is brilliantly supported by
the powerful music of Beethoven’s seventh symphony, while the slow movement of the
Emperor piano concerto brings beauty and poignancy to the end of the film. Mozart’s
fizzing overture to a matrimonial ‘day in the life‘ is balanced by Elis Pehkonen’s infectious
Playing with Fire concert overture which begins our musical journey.
We are delighted to welcome back Turkish superstar pianist Idil Biret whose legendary
discography on the Naxos label includes all the major piano concertos and concert
repertoires of the great classical masters.
